Mr. Basrai is a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) and also of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

He was in professional practice for more than forty years before retiring in 2017, from KPMG Taseer Hadi & Co., Chartered Accountants, where he was a Senior Partner. His experience includes Audits, Consultancy and Tax. He has been involved in audits of large Public and Private Sector organizations in Pakistan as well as abroad. Mr. Basrai has worked on various consultancy assignments relating to project feasibility studies, executive search and recruitment, pre-investment reviews and other related fields. Mr. Basrai has vast and diversified experience of advising companies on various matters relating to income tax, both locally and abroad. He is currently a Government nominee on the council of ICAP for the period till 2021. He has also in the past held the position of Past President and Vice President of ICAP. He is the founder trustee and currently the Chairman of Commecs Educational Trust (CET) and also a Trustee and Treasurer of Burhani Hospital Trust (BHT). CET and BHT are both nonprofit organizations and approved by Pakistan Centre of Philanthropy. Mr. Basrai is a Life member of the English Speaking Union and currently holding the position of Treasurer. He is also a Life member of Karachi Council on Foreign relations and a Patron member of Public Interest Law Association of Pakistan. Mr. Basrai is also a member of Management Association of Pakistan and has also served in the past as its Vice President, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary. He is also a life member of Pakistan American Cultural Center and haa in the past been a Vice President and Treasurer.
